Last weekend, the city of Bressanone/Brixen had all but two reasons to celebrate: the inauguration of its brand-new Mobility Centre and the “Station of the Year” award.
On Saturday 28 May 2022, Arno Kompatscher – head of the South Tyrol Government – solemnly opened the new Bressanone/Brixen Mobility Centre in the company of the who’s who of local politics, public administration, mobility and the construction industry. “This new Mobility Centre is a crucial transportation hub not just for the citizens of Bressanone/Brixen but for the entire Valle Isarco/Eisacktal valley”, he announced, stressing that the project was just the latest in a series of key building blocks for more sustainability and protecting the climate.
According to local tradition, Dean Florian Kerschbaumer gave the Mobility Centre his blessing, with traditional live music provided by the Musikkapelle Peter Mayr Pfeffersberg band.
An inter-modal network of mobility options
The Mobility Centre is designed to match and connect different forms of transportation – trains, buses, scooters and bicycles – in the best possible way, South Tyrol Minister for Mobility Daniel Alfreider added: “At the heart of the new Mobility Centre is its – mostly covered – bicycle parking, with additional spaces that can be locked set to be added by the summer. This will take the total bicycle parking capacity up to 1000.” And with plenty of space for cars, too, plus 48 covered parking spots for motorbikes and scooters, making the shift to public transport should become increasingly easy for commuters, he continued.
A whole new chapter for mobility in Bressanone/Brixen
For Mayor Peter Brunner, the new Mobility Centre is a dream come true – one that has been a long time in the making: “Today, we are opening a whole new chapter for mobility in and around Bressanone/Brixen. And we are delighted to welcome visitors from near and far to our all-new station forecourt!”, he added upon accepting the “Station of the Year” award conferred by Walter Weiss, President of the Friends of the Railway association, and Siegfried Tutzer, the representative of the award jury. The annual award highlights the importance of train stations in a bid to further increase their appreciation and value.
Facts and figures
The new Mobility Centre project was coordinated by STA – Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG/Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA. STA Director Joachim Dejaco: “The Bressanone/Brixen Mobility Centre is almost 20,000 m2 in size. From now on, the buses will stop under a large canopy, allowing passengers to get on and off comfortably and shielded from the weather.” In addition, a modern display system will soon be available at all bus stops, providing real-time information on departures and arrivals. In the meantime, this data can already be accessed in the südtirolmobil app.
The construction works were carried out by local businesses: Klapfer Bau, Wipptaler Bau, Goller Bögl and Marx Bau, with NET Engineering and Brunico/Bruneck-based iPM Engineering in charge of the building supervision.
The Bressanone/Brixen Mobility Centre was financed with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
